Project First Step Project First Step is a coordinated effort in Fresno County to recruit an increased number of volunteer attorneys to represent victims of domestic violence. Past FCWL President Deborah Coe led the Fresno County Women Lawyers in initiating this program, along with the Pro Bono Section of the Fresno County Bar, the Voluntary Legal Services Program of Central California Legal Services, Inc., and The Marjaree Mason Center, a non-profit organization that aids victims of domestic abuse and homelessness. Volunteers who participate in Project First Step may represent the client at a single temporary restraining order hearing, or they may choose to represent her at additional hearings. Project First Step in Fresno County has served as a model program for other counties throughout California.
